High total alkalinity is why your pH keeps climbing no matter how much acid you add — the water is over-buffered. Lowering it takes one counter-intuitive move: the same acid that drops pH also drops alkalinity, and aeration brings the pH back. Here's the method.
Why high alkalinity is a problem
When TA runs above ~120 ppm, the water is so heavily buffered that pH locks high and drifts up constantly. You get cloudy water, scale forming on surfaces and equipment, and chlorine that works less effectively. Chasing pH with acid every few days is the classic symptom — the real fix is bringing alkalinity down.
The counter-intuitive part
There's no "alkalinity reducer" in a jug. Acid lowers both pH and alkalinity together. The catch is you don't want to leave pH crashed at the bottom — so you pair acid with aeration, which raises pH back up without raising alkalinity. Cycle the two and TA walks down while pH lands back in range.
The acid-then-aerate method
- Test pH and alkalinity so you know your starting numbers and how far you have to go.
- Add muriatic acid to drop pH to about 7.0–7.2. Pour it slowly into the water in front of a running return, with the pump on. Get your dose from the pH calculator →. Don't take pH below 7.0.
- Aerate to bring pH back up. Turn on anything that agitates the surface — return jets aimed up, waterfalls, spa jets, fountains, or a cheap air pump. Aeration drives off CO₂, which raises pH while leaving alkalinity where it is.
- Re-test and repeat. Each acid-then-aerate cycle nudges TA lower. Repeat until alkalinity reaches ~80–100 ppm and pH holds around 7.4–7.6.

Safety first
- Always add acid to water, never water to acid — and never pour acid into the skimmer.
- Never mix chemicals. Acid and chlorine together release toxic gas. Add one, let it circulate, then the other.
- Ventilate and protect yourself. Work outdoors and upwind, with gloves and eye protection; muriatic acid fumes are harsh.
- Go in stages. Add about three-quarters of a dose, let it circulate, and re-test before adding more.
